Benvenuti – Analysis

This piece touches me deeply – I see it as a caress that reassures the deepest parts of my soul. It enchants me like the infinite gaze of my sons.

I think the music in this arrangement reaches almost unparalleled spiritual heights. I mention this because it has important implications for its performance. In a piece like this, by adding one note too many, or failing to provide sufficient rhythmic support, you risk upsetting a very delicate balance.

I recommend not playing the kick drum or toms, but instead playing only the cymbals and snare, (mostly) with brushes and mallets. I would avoid Elvin-style swung beats in this context.

With this important premise out of the way, I will now describe how the piece is structured.

The string quartet opens the composition: here I chose not to play the drums. The theme begins at letter A and continues through B and C, with the drums accompanying it with a very discrete even eighths beat with brushes.

Three different brush patterns can be used in this piece:  full circular motion for the first theme; half circular motion for the second theme; and a combined motion for the trumpet solo. The latter covers letters E and F, with the theme returning halfway through letter F.

Don’t forget that this composition requires a range of dynamics, from pianissimo up to mezzo forte in some brief passages (at the end of the trumpet solo and at the end of the exposition of the theme). Blend into the band’s sound by using brushes and not trying to change shape too often.

Keep tempo in a gentle and delicate manner, always ensuring the rhythm is clear… it should be propelling and assertive.

Enjoy the ride.

altissimo livello (secondo me).
even eight data dalle spazzole in modo discreto.
troppo spesso.
Tenete il tempo in modo morbido, delicato e sempre
chiaro ritmicamente…propulsivo, assertivo.
Buon viaggio.
